AND A CRITIQUE BY DEREK PERRY (Thank you Derek)
After The Raj

Who are the survivors of the Raj and why did so many stay on in India? This is a very broad canvas over which to splash the colours, shapes, and changing landscape of expatriate Britons who came and went in their droves over the period of that segment of history some call the British Raj. The 'Stayers On', as they were termed, or were they the 'hangers' on from the Raj? Were they naturally eccentric individuals or was it necessary to be eccentric to live on in post independent India? How do you define the essence of the Raj, in the context of other occupation rulers of India's history, and why has it been particularly accepted as British? Questions there are and many more when it comes to the interactive forces that drew so many people to feel that their destiny finally was home in the new India.

The author, Hugh Purcell has chosen to answer these intriguing questions by interviewing ten or so personalities who now call India home. Their careers and backgrounds are varied, not all are first generation Brits, and some are of the Anglo Indian genre. All of them have fascinating tales to tell. Through their eyes the author weaves a pattern of anecdotes with help from the many other contemporary characters who share a similar experience. This is an extraordinary era, rich in the narrative of two cultures, dripping with nostalgia, Hugh Purcell tells it all very well.

For the readers of the Koi-Hai web site, aptly named by Mr Purcell as a "club for nostalgic tea planters", the Raj has a chapter describing the present home of "Bob the Planter" in Shillong. Through Bob, the author expertly traces the history of tea and the ingredients that made the life of a tea planter such a special romance. He does this with the help of stories made familiar by three current Koi-Hai correspondents.

Another chapter deals with the so called Calcutta "box wallahs" and the rise and fall of Agency Houses. Koi-Hai readers will love this one as every tea planter has a harsh memory or two of the impersonal attitude that often flowed from Calcutta Head Office wallahs.

The final chapter tells of the real 'Stayers On', those buried in Cemeteries the length and breath, North and South of India. While this book is titled "After the Raj", inevitably the author draws material to support the narrative from the great period, before the Raj. Hugh Purcell is not new to India, he has had a long association with the country commencing from student days in 1964. His research is excellent and factual, the work has the stamp of authority, and he knows his subject matter. This book should be well received not only by previous Raj dwellers but also by many of the present day citizens of Britain and India who somehow still regard the British tenure of India with compulsive interest and curious affection.

‘The Tea Industry of Assam : Origin and Development’ authored by Dr. Pradip Baruah was released in a function held at Press Club, Guwahati on 21st November, 2007. Mr. Basudeb Banerjee, Chairman, Tea Board of India released the book in the meeting presided over by noted Economist and Economic Advisor to Govt. of Assam, Dr. Jayanta Madhab.

Dr. Jayanta Madhab opined that there was dearth of book  on Assam tea and the beautifully written and illustrated book would help all wanting to know about Assam tea in particular and tea in general. The distinguished speakers congratulated Dr. Baruah for gifting the tea industry of  a valuable book with years of sincere hard labour. Mr. Bijoy Kr. Bhuyan, a veteran  tea planter, observed that it was a historic day for the tea industry and the book was a major literary contribution to tea after a very long time.
