The Elephants have their day

Kaziranga.

Flag draped elephants take part in a procession during at the Kaziranga National Park about 150 miles east of Gauhati, the main city of the northeastern Indian State of Assam. The festival is held at the start of the year to foster awareness among local people of elephant habits.
The animals have left trails of destruction throughout the State as their traditional habitat is destroyed.
Their misadventures include raiding military depots and drinking liquor

The Stillwell Road today

This informative article is reproduced from the Times of London May  12 2007

Chinese troops fighting Japanese occupiers were the first to use the Stillwell Road linking India to China via Burma in 1945 It is still used by Buddhist monks in Burma to collect daily donations

Photographs by John Gill  from his 1998 and 2000 visits to India

 June 2000
John Gill
kindly sent us the following of his recent  trip to India. He travelled from the far west, Jaisalmer in Rajasthan to Margharita in the east corner of Assam and included trips to Lucknow. Mussoorie, Gauhati, Tezpur, and Shillong in Meghalaya

John then travelled to South India from Gauhati to Trivandrum by train and returning to Delhi for his flight back to his home in the United Kingdom. His trip spanned eight weeks, and he had the good fortune to meet many old friends. He also made some new friends including our "Delhi Correspondent" Kailash Chaurasia.

John is currently working on his travel log book and trying to finish his recordings of the times he had on this trip, and he promises to give us a more detailed story of his travels soon. In the meantime I hope that you will find the following photos to aid your own personal memories.

John Gill,  formerly of the Amgoorie Company, visited North East India in 1998 and kindly  let us have some of the photographs he took during his visit.

These photos are shown below with some comments which we hope will be of  interest to the members who served in the Jorhat  and Darjeeling areas of North East India.

There is no photograph to prove it, but there is now a bridge from Tezpur to the South Bank of the Bramaputra, suitable for all vehicular traffic.
