A recent collection of photographs kindly supplied by Rex Naug and we thank him for taking the time and trouble to send to www.koi-hai.com

Rex tells us that the photographs were taken were taken in October 2006 by a friend Davina Conquo of Perth, Western Australia, during her visit to her birthplace (Calcutta) after an absence of many years.  She commented rather nostalgically, that she was able to see past all the awful congestion, pollution and squalor that has overtaken the old city, and to see the true character of the place and the people which remains unchanged.  She described how after an interminable wait at a pedestrian crossing a Bengali gentleman who was beside her at the crossing turned to her with a charming smile and said "Madam, we now have an opportunity - shall we negotiate?" Upon her assent he escorted her across the street waving his "chatta" to oncoming traffic to stop!  Only in Calcutta!

Romesh Bhattacharji  has kindly sent in these pictures and we thank him sincerely.

The picture below ---is it not a piece of history?

The first well "spudded" by percussion method in 1889

The Editor asked Richard Leitch son of the late John and Joy Leirch who is in the Oil Industry to explain what Spudded meant and below was his reply, Thank you Richard

In the old days prior to the invention of the rotary drilling bit,
wells were drilled using a cable tool system.  This entailed the use
of various shaped tools that were raised and lowered into the earth
virtually chipping and digging the soil away.  The wells then would
normally blow out.  We avoid that these days!!!  One of the senior
personnel on all drilling rigs is known as a Toolpusher.  This goes
back to the days when these cable tool rigs were in use.

This photograph is from the Digboi Museum
